The Menopause Charity has been working with Afrocats, a charity supporting people who face social exlusion in Greater Manchester.

The Menopause Charity has been working with Afrocats, a charity supporting people who face social exlusion in Greater Manchester.  Together we delivered a pilot project dedicated to help reaching women from diverse backgrounds, including refugees and asylum seekers from Greater Manchester

After a series of short online and in-person education events, the two charities hosted an event at the Whitworth Art Gallery offering a safe space for women, to raise much-needed awareness and discussion of menopause.  Over 50 women attended and were warmed up by Afrocats founder Magdalen with a creative movement warm up, enjoying dance from all corners of the world.

Dr Zoe and Dr Charlotte delivered sessions designed to help raise awareness, tackle stigma and aid discussion of symptom and available treatments.  The sessions were supported by interpreters to help those present understand the important advice being shared.

Other activities on the day included a menopause mindfulness session and art tracking the symptoms those present experienced.  Finally, the guests enjoyed a culturally-inclusive lunch before departing with environmentally friendly goody bags.

The attendees commented that they felt more informed and empowered to speak with their GP to help guide their diagnosis.  We are looking forward to working with Afrocats in the future as we look to build on this early success.

Further pilot projects are being developed in other regions whilst we work to raise the funds needed to ensure everyone can access fact-based information and support.

If you would like more information on our reach projects, or if you are interested in funding a pilot project in your area please contact us [email protected]

The Menopause Charity is grateful to all those who volunteered their time, space or provided items for the goody bags.
