Many people will be aware of, and impacted by, HRT shortages in the UK. These are caused by manufacturing shortages and supply issues. Lack of access to, and HRT shortages, can cause significant distress for many women, and we are sorry for the impact this may be causing you.
If you have been impacted by the shortages or are having difficulty obtaining HRT, we recognise you may consider exploring other options.
Never buy HRT online
It is important to never buy HRT online. HRT is a prescription-only medicine, an online pharmacy must receive a legally valid prescription before dispensing.
This means you’ll either need a paper or electronic prescription from a GP or healthcare professional. Alternatively, some sites offer prescriber services, where you have an online consultation, and a prescription is then sent to a pharmacy for dispensing.
If you obtain prescription medicine online without a consultation and prescription, the website supplying this medicine is acting illegally.
Scam websites selling HRT online
We have become aware that fraudulent or scam websites, are now targeting vulnerable people seeking HRT online. In order to appear legitimate, these websites are copying branding, including that of The Menopause Charity.
The Menopause Charity does not sell or provide any form of treatment.
How to spot a fraudulent or scam website
It can be difficult to spot a fake, fraudulent or scam website, as scammers often mimic organisations by copying their branding.
You can use the GPhC’s register to check if a website is run by a registered pharmacy that meets UK standards and is legally allowed to sell medicines to the public.

HRT shortages
We have been repeatedly reassured that the HRT shortages are temporary, whilst pharmaceutical companies and their suppliers seek to resolve the issues.
We appreciate it can be troubling if you are affected by the shortages. There are alternatives available. Speak to your healthcare provider to discuss available HRT options and share any concerns you have about changes to your usual prescription.
For your safety and security, never turn to an online website to purchase HRT.
